Aisha Center offers guidance and support to couples who wish to apply for divorce according to Swedish law and Islamic principles.

For a divorce to be carried out in accordance with Swedish law, the following applies:

Application to the court
Divorce is applied for at the court where one of the spouses is registered. The application can be submitted jointly by both spouses or by one spouse alone.

Marriage certificate
When applying, a marriage certificate may need to be attached. The marriage certificate must be obtained from Skatteverket (the Swedish Tax Agency), and both spouses usually need their own copies.

Cooling-off period
In some cases, a cooling-off period of at least six months is required, for example, if only one of the spouses wants to divorce or if the couple has children under 16 years of age. If both agree and no cooling-off period is required, the divorce can be carried out immediately.

Counseling and support
Aisha Center can offer consultations, family counseling and Islamic guidance before, during and after the divorce process. We can also provide information about the Islamic divorce process when the legal process according to Swedish law has begun or ended.

Islamic divorce
If the couple wishes to have an Islamic divorce (Talaq or Khul'), Aisha Center can help with the religious process in accordance with Islamic law and the center's guidelines, after reviewing the case and necessary documents. The Islamic divorce does not replace the legal divorce according to Swedish law.
